Le Potazzine

Le Potazzine

Italy • Tuscany

Tenuta Le Potazzine is made up of 5 hectares of vineyards registered in Brunello, three of which are deployed near the winery at an altitude of 507 meters above sea level while the other, planted in 1996, sits at 420 meters above sea level.

At the helm is Montalcino native, Gigliola Giannetti, who was working for Franco Biondi Santi when she planted the original holdings in 1993. A second site in Sant’Angelo in Colle brought the total vineyard area to five hectares, all at an excess of 450 metres, and farmed organically. Le Potazzine is managed today by Gigliola with the help of her daughters, Viola and Sofia - themselves nicknamed Le Potazzine by their maternal grandmother. In Montalcino ‘Le Pottazine’ is used to indicate the chickadees, small birds and brightly colored inhabitants of the Tuscan countryside and often used as a term of endearment.

Long macerations are favoured, rather than excess plunging or pumping over. Ageing – which takes place in traditional Slavonian oak botti for the Rosso and Brunello – is similarly unhurried. According to the owners, who carefully follow the steps in the vineyards and the stages of evolution in the cellar, their wine must simply be nice to drink.

The production currently stands at a total of about 30,000 bottles a year, including Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino and only in the best vintages will they produce their Brunello "Riserva". They also produce an IGT, 100% Sangiovese, from the youngest vineyards.
