Le Potazzine
Le Potazzine
Italy • Tuscany
The term " Potazzine " in Montalcino is used to indicate the chickadees , small birds, brightly colored inhabitants of the Tuscan countryside , which is why " Potazzine " often becomes a term of endearment with which grandparents and parents turn to their children. It was the maternal grandmother in fact that called in this way Viola and Sofia , daughters of Gigliola Giannetti , the owner of the winery and Montalcinese from birth.
The birth of Viola and Sofia also marks the various stages of development of the company, founded in 1993 as the eldest daughter Viola. Tenuta Le Potazzine is today made up of 5 hectares of vineyards registered in Brunello, three of which are deployed near the winery at an altitude of 507 meters above sea level , while the other , planted in 1996 at 420 meters above the sea level, the year of the birth of Sofia , are rather more to the south at about 340 meters above sea level near Sant'Angelo in Colle.
The purchase of this new plot has allowed to assemble the elegance and aromas of the grapes already grown to the west , in Le Prata , near the winery , with the body of the grapes grown further south , producing wines that tend toward the perfect equilibrium that stands for character and personality.
A part of the basement of Le Potazzine is a recently built . With a total area of 800 square meters , the cellar is divided into two zones: one hosts the inox steel containers and wooden vats for the vinification process ,the other, dedicated to aging, are arranged Slavonian oak barrels of various size, with a capacity of 30 and 50 hl.
According to the owners , who carefully follow the steps in the vineyards and the stages of evolution in the cellar, their wine must simply be nice to drink . This is achieved through a long process of vinification , from 28 to 32 days , which allows the grapes to express their characteristics through a completely natural fermentation without the addition of yeast and temperatures are not controlled . In this way they can produce wines with soft and elegant tannins that are aged in Slavonian oak barrels of medium size for both the Brunello for Rosso di Montalcino .
The production currently stands at a total of about 30,000 bottles a year, including Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino and only in the best vintages of particular value is produced the "Riserva" of Brunello. It is also produced an IGT, Sangiovese 100% from the youngest vineyards called IGT Sangiovese Potazzine, and also a small quantity of a traditional Grappa di Brunello aged 18 months in big barrels .
