Domaine Jean Tardy
Domaine Jean Tardy
France • Vosne-Romanee
The Tardy family has been producing wine since the 1920s, and Guillaume Tardy, still in his 30s, has been running the current estate for more than 10 years, establishing a serious reputation for himself and his wines in Burgundy. Guillaume studied winemaking and travelled the world before returning to his family estate to slowly take the reins and weave in some modern winemaking whilst still respecting the traditions of those that have come before him.
Now a leading producer in the Côte d'Or, Domaine Jean Tardy et Fils is a real gem in the portfolio. The domaine only owns 5 hectares, creating tiny quantities of each vintage. It is a privilege to try a wine from Jean Tardy!
Allen Meadows of Burghound notes that “Tardy continues to do great work with his mostly villages level appellations and his wines are known for their ability to drink well young but age extremely well.”
The Wine
The style here is deep and rich, dense and structured, with incredible perfumed fruit and lithe, supple tannins, and the resultant wines are always utterly gorgeous, yet with the stuffing for long-term cellaring.
The Haute Côte de Nuits ‘Maëlie’, a vineyard very near Vosne Romanée, is a classic example of this region over-delivering on its more modest price point. “The best Nuit Saint Georges village wine – it should be a 1er Cru” is how Guillaume describes ‘Bas de Combe’ – just look at where the vineyard is situated to see why! Guillaume’s NSG 1er Cru ‘Argillats’ really demonstrates the heights to which the village can rise. His Echezeaux, from a plot of 80-year-old vines abutting Grands Echezeaux, is always snapped up by the lucky few, but right across the range, there is something for all Burgundy lovers to enjoy from the domaine.
