Cerbaiona’s first official history is recorded in tax documents dated 1454. The manor house, private chapel and formal gardens were developed in the late Renaissance in step with the birth of villeggiatura. This return to the countryside was a revival of the ancient Roman concept of the villa as a place of repose and to be filled with delights, surrounded by gardens, extraordinary natural beauty, vineyards and olive groves.

Like many farms in Tuscany, after the abolition of sharecropping in the late 1960s, Cerbaiona, for the first time in its long history, was abandoned. Over a decade later an outsider from Lombardy, Diego Molinari, acquired the property as a place to spend his early retirement and to satisfy a long held desire to produce Brunello. This was now the 1980s, yet the number of estates producing Brunello di Montalcino barely reached two dozen.

In 1985 Molinari made his debut on the market with 1981 Cerbaiona Brunello. The 1982 Cerbaiona Brunello followed and it was soon recognised as a harbinger of a new golden age for Brunello and Cerbaiona in particular. The last vintage taken to market by Molinari was the 2010.
