Gerard Julien
Gerard Julien
France • Comblanchien, Burgundy
Domaine Gérard Julien is located in Comblachien, just south of Nuits Saint Georges and dates back to the late 19th century. As Gérard continued to purchase more holdings in the 70’s and 80’s, he was able to grow the estate to roughly 10 hectares with parcels distributed in Nuits Villages, Nuits Saint Georges, and Echézeaux Grand Cru.
Étienne Julien, son of Gérard, assumed control of the estate in 2012 as winemaker. Being the fifth generation of the estate, he is introducing new methods to his winemaking while keeping the vision in line with previous generations. Étienne is a cheerful young vigneron with a great sense of humor. His energy clearly translates into his wines; they exude another level of liveliness and energy.
Ever since his first vintage, Étienne has taken a more organic approach in his vineyards as he limits the amount of chemicals that are used. Before the grapes are destemmed, he carefully monitors his yields by sorting them both in the vineyards and in the winery. In addition, he uses concrete vats and isn’t afraid of using new oak barrels. By using old vines, Étienne avoids overworking his wines and allows the innate flavours to come through.
Consequently, by incorporating all of these methods Étienne is able to produce wine with great verve, intensity, and longevity. He produces energetic and vibrant wines with tremendous depth.
