Boutique Wines

Located in a remote corner of southeastern Tuscany, Tenuta di Trinoro specializes in rich, age-worthy red wines made of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot.

The 200-hectare estate sits in viticultural isolation in the Orcia Valley near Sarteano, where Tuscany meets Umbria and Lazio.

Owner and winemaker Andrea Franchetti acquired the property in the 1980s and in the beginning of the 1990s started planting his first vines. The most important lesson he gleaned from a stint in Bordeaux was the crucial role played by terroir. He saw, in the rough woodland that would become Trinoro,clay-limestone and gravel soils reminiscent of those in Saint-Émilion. Only select parcels were suitable for vine-growing, amid a sea of blue clay, and those he cleared by hand and planted in the style of the Bordelais: high-density, meter-by-meter plantings, with cuttings brought over from some of the region’s great estates.

Tight planting, high thinning, very low yields, extreme ripeness, and concentration of flavor characterize his winemaking style. The wines are highly perfumed and opulent, at once approachable and meant to be left to develop in the bottle over time.

Tenuta di Trinoro

2012 Tenuta di Trinoro

The flagship wine, Tenuta di Trinoro is remarkably direct and appetizing, and yet it's made to last for decades. It is immediately riper and richer than red Bordeaux, benefitting as it does from the bright Tuscan sun, but is much more complex than other Italian Bordeaux blends.

98 Points Vinous Media

Another stunning wine, the 2012 Tenuta di Trinoro wraps around the palate with stunning depth and power. Today, the flavors are incredibly primary, but it is the wine’s textural depth and nuance that impress. The 2012 boasts tremendous concentration, but there are no hard edges, just pure fruit and voluptuousness to burn.

2013 Palazzi

Palazzi is an intense, red-fruited, strongly changing wine, with bright acidity and very fresh characteristics.

Trinoro’s 2013 Palazzi (Merlot) offers up a compelling array of super-ripe red stone fruits, wild flowers, white truffle and exotic spices, all in the classic Trinoro style built on opulence. Raspberry jam and wild flowers build to a huge, aromatically intense finish supported by silky tannins. The 2013 needs time in bottle to develop, but it is hugely promising. Over the time I followed it the 2013 just got better and better.

95 Points Robert Parker

This wine is made from very stressed fruit.” Of course, in wine speak, this is a very good thing, resulting in a wine that shows bigger density, opulence and overall concentration. This Cabernet Franc opens to a blackish color and thick aromas that raise heavily and slowly from the glass. The vines are 25-years-old. Blackberry and dried cherry segues to sassy spice and tobacco.

Immediately forthcoming, with pure cherry, raspberry and rose aromas and flavors, this elegant red is delicate and ethereal. Accents of mineral, herbs, tobacco and spice lend complexity and depth as this glides to a long finish. Cabernet Franc.

A smooth, polished version, with a hefty dose of licorice accenting the black currant, blackberry and tobacco flavors. The tannins are grippy, yet this has all the components in the right proportions. The finish evokes spice and sweet fruit. Cabernet Franc

2015 Le Cupole

2015 is one of the great vintages of Tenuta di Trinoro. The hot weather came over our vineyards only during the first months: already at the beginning of August, the average temperatures fell very fast, and we had a cool, even cold, ripening period until November. Rains fell intermittently but were light, with happy drying periods. That cool, moderate weather let us go harvesting in each vineyard after the proper waiting time.

94 Points - International Wine Report

The 2015 Le Cupole is a dense concentrated red with gorgeous aromas of black currants and black cherries woven together with spring floral, tar, tobacco and hints of graphite all soaring from the glass. This full-bodied concentrated red continues to impress with its remarkable depth as it delivers layers of ripe dark fruits, which expand through the long finish. This is an incredible blend of 58% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot which will age beautifully over the next decade and even beyond. This is by far one of the best values in all of Italy and it's simply astonishing that a wine of this quality can be found for this price point.
